Mobiles buzzing says chief of Nokia

The unexpected strength of demand for mobile phones will continue into next year, defying analysts' forecasts of an imminent slowdown, according to Jorma Ollila, Nokia's outgoing chief executive.

Analysts had predicted a rapid slowdown in global demand over the next few years as ownership levels in the developed world reached saturation. Growth rates would at least halve from last year's 30 per cent, they said.

Instead, shipments have so far remained more than a fifth higher than in 2004.

The slack has been picked up by emerging markets, in which manufacturers are helping to stimulate demand with low-cost handsets, and by stronger-than-expected handset replacement in mature markets.

Mr Ollila told the Financial Times in a joint interview with Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, his successor: “The buzz that there is in the Middle East, the Gulf and Africa is the same we saw in China seven or eight years ago in the early part of the market cycle, the same we saw a couple of years ago in Latin America.”

Nokia last month raised guidance for its third-quarter earnings, citing a combination of unexpectedly strong sales, good cost control and one-off items.

Mr Ollila said: “We are surely benefiting from market growth that is pretty healthy. There were a number of analysts dragging their feet in January this year, saying it would not be like the last two years of healthy growth. You don't hear that any longer. “We have had to review our volume numbers upward month-by-month. I have a funny feeling next year will be another good growth year.”
